Finally, there's a way to take full advantage of your iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad. In order to do this you have to what is called JAILBREAK your device.

I must extend my full respect to Kurt and Romey they are the ones who helped me jailbreak my iPod Touch and unveil the unlimited power I now have with my device. Therefore I have decided to let iPod touch/iPhone users have the requisite knowledge so that they can decide whether they want to jailbreak or not.

If you want to know how to Jailbreak your device just visit my tab "How to Jailbreak"

Before we move on, Softwareassist.tk must acknowledge George Hotz (GeoHot), the 17 year old kid who first unlocked the iPhone in 2007 and made Jailbreaking possible.

WHAT IS JAILBREAKING?

With jailbreaking you can modify everything on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, add additional applications and even unlock the iPhone for use with another cellular network. Jailbreaking allows you to run applications like “Cydia" and “Winterboard” on the iPhone or iPodTouch, which lets you to add cool programs and customize iPhone/iPod Touch application icons, wallpaper, dock, status bar, keyboard, ringtones etc. In essence, jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod Touch means freeing it from the limitations imposed on it by Apple.

To see what a Jailbroken device looks like scroll down to the pictures.

WHY WOULD I WANT TO JAILBREAK?

It lets you do everything from customizing the look of your device to installing third-party applications (cracked apps). Depending on how far you're willing to go, you can do even more than that: Jailbreaking even lets you to unlock your phone so you can use it with a carrier other than AT&T. In a nutshell with a jailbroken device you can download the cracked apps which are all full version apps not from the app store but from cydia, as well as apps from the app store; whereas unjailbroken devices are limited to the app store and no customization.

PROS AND CONS OF JAILBREAKING?

THE GOOD

1. You can download cracked full version apps from cydia eg. games. Therefore those apps in the app store you wish you could get but had to buy them... well no more!!!!.

2. You can still download from the apple app store.

3. You can customize the look of your device: have a picture or video for your background and lockscreen wallpaper instead of the dead black background wallpaper. You can even have 6 or more apps on your dock instead of four by default, and make it transparent etc. You can give your device a mac as well as windows look. All possible with Winterboard from cydia. You are not limited to this there is much much more you can do.

4. You can emulate the gameboy, gameboy colour, gameboy advanced, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, PS1 & PS2 consoles and play their respective games on your device.

5. You can make your device very organized, create folders, set the number of apps per page and on the dock. Trust me the possibilities are endless. I just listed a view THERE'S MUCH MORE!!!!.

6. It is not illegal to jailbreak.

7. If you have changed your mind or something goes wrong after jailbreaking, you can easily restore the device and return it back to normal.

THE BAD

1. Jailbreaking voids Apple's warranty.

2. Might slow down ur device (not noticeable)

3. Ur device can become bricked which makes it non responsive (1 in 10,000 chance) and even if it does there are ways to unbrick it.

4. May reduce battery life (Not significant).

OVERALL

The Pros out way the cons significantly in my opinion. I was really nervous and I asked myself "Should I jailbreak it man? I don't want to mess up my device". My advice is:

1. Be fully educated about it.

2. Know that you don't have to jailbreak if you don't want to

3. Follow the instructions on how to jailbreak your device carefully.

You will say this afterwards "Why did I not do this before"

CAN I BRING MY DEVICE BACK TO DEFAULT AFTER JAILBREAKING

YES! Simply use iTunes to restore it. However, I've heard that this still does not unvoid your warranty with Apple.

Chris Pirillo's Reason why you should not jailbreak. www.chris.pirillo.com

* #1. It’s not sanctioned by Apple. Apple has been very careful with how they have developed their hardware, and are very closed about it. When someone develops something for an Apple product and that development isn’t sanctioned by Apple, you run the risk of it not working as it should, conflicting with the device itself, or just all-around bricking that iPhone.

* #2.My iPhone just works already. It’s not perfect, no. There are other things that I wish it could do, yes. But… it’s not doing anything that I don’t want it to do. So why mess with something that already works?

* #3. There is an SDK (Software Development Kit) coming soon from Apple. This will allow developers to create more things for the iPhone. With the enthusiasm already shown for this, I am confident some pretty cool things will be created in no time, and released.

* #4. Hacks can lead to problems. I have done this to other devices in the past. Every time, it invariably either messed something else up, or caused an issue with a future update. I need my device to work, not get screwed up because I installed something the device wasn’t expecting or necessarily designed for.

* #5. Wirelesspacket brought up this one. He pointed out that you don’t have a trust system in place when you use something like this. If it’s not sanctioned by Apple, then the trust system you are relying on may not even exist. You’re trusting the hack will do what it says, and won’t cause issues. But you can’t be sure.
